fashion focus: a lotta props to lotto for spring

During our almost hourly powows at Indian Wells last week, my friends Chip and Charge both chimed in on their favorite outfits from the desert. Their unanimous choice? The looks from Lotto.

Juan Carlos Ferrero - Indian Wells 2008Juan Carlos Ferrero - Indian Wells 2008

Former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero was wearing a the Kontact Print tee in a white/maroon colorway (with matching shorts). This is the style with the metallic graphic on the right torso. (FYI: After a strong start Down Under, Juanqui’s record has been dismal, with back-to-back first round losses in Rotterdam and Dubai, followed by a loss in the fourth round of the Pacific Life Open to David Nalbandian.)

Yep, that’s a mock mandarin collar. I still like v-necks better, but this is genius!

Guillermo Garcia Lopez - Indian Wells 2008

Meanwhile, Guillermo Garcia Lopez wore a red/white/black polo. Very clean, and stood out very nicely in the green and blue courts in the desert.

The flip side: Lotto’s casual Leggenda collection looks pretty good for spring/summer 2008 — they’re all about fleur de lis, which I’m currently into. I might do a post on it later with pictures, if I have time. For now, you should check out the Lotto site and browse.

Ana Ivanovic - Indian Wells 2008Ana Ivanovic - Indian Wells 2008

Ana Ivanovic made quick work of Svetlana Kuznetsova in their final match at Indian Wells. (The scoreline: 6-4, 6-3.) Ana took home the $332,000 purse, a bracelet from Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics, and that cute humpback whale trophy. Kuznetsova, meanwhile, took home $163,000.

Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008Novak Djokovic - Indian Wells 2008

Novak Djokovic proved that he’s currently the best men’s tennis player in the world by taking his first Indian Wells title. He beat the en fuego Mardy Fish who, before Sunday, had beaten Roger Federer, David Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt, and Nikolay Davydenko in this tournament.

There were a few close calls (and Nole started to self-destruct), but the Serb pulled it together in the end for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win. Props to Mardy for a good two weeks. I can live without his basketball shorts, though. Also: cover your ankles, and stop shaving your legs!

Nole took home a $555,000 paycheck while Mardy raked in $277,500.

Their humps: “The Pacific Promise” Perpetual Trophy is 30 inches tall. It’s a replica of an 18-foot sculpture of a mother humpback whale and her calf. The original resides in Pacific Life’s main office in Newport Beach, Calif. The sculpture was created by artist Randy Puckett, who’s known for his whale work.

Scorelines: Ana will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Pacific Life Open finals today. The Serb took out compatriot Jelena Jankovic 7-6 (3), 6-3 and Sveta needed three sets to down Maria Sharapova. Ivanovic has a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over Kuznetsova (including winning a title match in Berlin last year).

mardy goes gangsta

In this world of customization — gold tennis racquets, tuxedos, monograms — it only makes sense when players create their own post-match victory rituals. There’s the Youzhny salute, the Agassi/Srichaphan bow, the Venus twirl, and the Petr Korda scissor kick (good riddance!).

Mardy Fish - Indian Wells 2008

Mardy Fish gives us his own with this adorable “hug” to each side of the stands at Court 1 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. I’m sure he appreciated the crowd’s support in his 6-3, 6-2 win (his serve never got broken!) over Roger Federer.

Gwen Stefani - Mary Joe Fernandez - Indian Wells 2008

Gwen Stefani was on hand at yesterday’s men’s semifinal match between her besty Roger Federer and American Mardy Fish. The World No. 1 was upset 6-3, 6-2 in what looked like an uninspired performance. This isn’t to take away from Fish (whose backhand Justin Gimelstob kept “lauding”, by the way) — I’d never seen a one-handed backhand picked on so much since Davenport took out Steffi Graf in that ’99 Wimbledon final!

In case you didn’t know: Mary Joe Fernandez is married to Tony Godsick, who is Roger’s agent.

Spotted, but not photographed: Will Ferrell.
