ita men’s indoors: virginia takes down usc

Emilio Gomez plays in the ITA National Men/s Tennis Team Indoor Championship

Cavalier Tennis: The second-seeded USC Trojans were no match for top team Virginia at this past weekend’s 2013 ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship, hosted in Seattle by the University of Washington. Virginia won the final 4-2, taking the doubles point and the top three singles points. USC gets top clothing marks, though, especially with this retro kit from the earlier rounds and the all-black Nike outfit (seen above on Emilio Gomez), which reminds us of the Darth Federer outfit, also by Nike, worn by Roger Federer at the 2007 U.S. Open.

kit count: lacoste shows at french tourney in montpellier

#kitcount - Feb 4-10, 2013

Last (gar)men(ts) standing: As much as we here at TSF pay attention to the scorelines week in and out, we’re also curious about which brands have been making the smartest (luckiest?) moves with their sponsorships: are they putting eggs in the correct tennis baskets? Are their players making the later rounds of tournaments?

#kitcount: If you have questions, feedback, or comments about this, please contact us with the #kitcount hashtag. Looking forward to explore this with y’all.

Croatian love: The sponsor-less Ivan Dodig is makin use of his real estate with shout-outs to his homeland, similar to how Marcos Baghdatis had Cyprus badges for a brief period in 2010. Dodig’s worn badges over his kits in Kooyong and at the Australian Open.

davis cup: are you in yet, juan monaco?

Juan Monaco practices ahead of the Feb 2013 Davis Cup tie against Germany
Practice makes perfect: Our besties at BATennis are all over the Davis Cup tie between Argentina and Germany, being contested in Buenos Aires this weekend. Top Argentine Juan Monaco, who was one of the earliest scalps at the 2013 Australian Open, leads the host team. Loving that practice tee from adidas.

fashion focus: australian open highlight(er)s

The fashions on the courts of Australian Open are a little more subtle this year, but a few things have stood out, most notably the presence of bright yellows and greens — the highlighter shades — for match play.

Alexandr Dolgopolov - Gael Monfils - Andy Murray - 2013 Australian Open

Gael Monfils (center), now a member of the Asics stable (he was previously with K-Swiss), played in a sleeveless crew — the Frenchman’s trademark — as he upset 18th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-7(7), 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. Andy Murray, on the right, is wearing this season’s Barricade crew, with the same shoulder detail that carried through from the end of last season.

Maria Sharapova - Nike - 2013 Australian Open

Grey was also the accent color of choice, with the straps on Maria Sharapova‘s Premier Tennis Dress from Nike in that shade (but we’re in love with the futuristic lines at the check and in the racerback), as well as the trims on the men’s adidas adiZero (on Dolgo) and Barricade (Murray) lines for the Australian summer.

More: Lisicki, Caro, Tomic, and the boys of Lotto all wear the brights — see ‘em  after the cut…

before london, andy tried a new game

Small court, big results. Before Andy Murray‘s London hopes got muddled because of injury, the Scot took to a British warehouse to play some Road Tennis. Not sure what that is? Nor were we. adidas explains:

[We invited the] Road Tennis Association of Barbados to London, to teach Murray how to play Road Tennis. A cross between traditional tennis and table tennis, Road Tennis is played on the street, with participants chalking out their own courts. Murray had never played the game before, and was given just one hour to pick up his wooden bat and attempt to master the game’s ins and outs, before we put him up against Barbados’ finest.

In the video above, Murray gets a “warm-up” with storied English boxer David Haye, who is now retired, and British rapper Example.

adidas noted that the Murray vid was the first of many to come for the brand over the next year: “The event marked the start of our new campaign, where we’ll be challenging some of the world’s best tennis players, around the biggest tournaments next year.” Excited? You bet we are!

As for who Murray gets a lesson from on the Road Tennis pavement? That’d be Sylvain “Lama” Barnett, a legend in Barbados and one of the Pro Road Tennis Association’s greatest players of all time.

men's best at the 2011 u.s. open

Testosterone treatment: The folks at adidas have done well to integrate current streetwear trends — geometric patterns, color blocking, neons — into their men’s adiZero collection. As a whole, this was the best look for the 2011 U.S. Open, seen on Juan Monaco, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco, Alexandr Dolgopolov, among others.

huff(po)ing and puff(po)ing: tsf on styleist

Over at Styleist, we point out a few U.S. Open fashion notables to the casual tennis fan: the neon Polo Ralph Lauren ballperson polos; Sharapova‘s Head bag (it’s true: we can’t stop raving about it); Galina Voskoboeva‘s ruffled dress from Ellesse (trust: it wouldn’t have made this list had it been worn by Nadia); Lacoste‘s color blocking for both men and women; and adidas‘ men’s adiZero line — all those triangle patterns are to die for!

What do you think? Was there something else we should have mentioned?

gilles simon: look a little closer

In case you missed it, Parisian shopping snob Gilles Simon‘s adidas Adipure tennis polo has an tonal checkered print — easier to see on the blue and red colorways. (Buy: adidas Adipure Polo, $50.)

Draw: Sort of a mini-upset for the 12th-seeded Simon as he beat 18th seed Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3). This was Delpo’s chance to defend his 2009 title after being sidelined by a wrist injury last year. Simon plays the winner of the Isner/Bogomolov third round match, still being played. caro is anything but under water in her adidas dress

Caro Wozniacki‘s in the 2011 U.S. Open as the world No. 1 and the event’s top seed, and comes into New York on the heels of a title win in New Haven. Sadly, this momentum will come to a grinding halt very very soon. (Draw: Women’s Singles)

Sleek: Wozniacki’s wearing a white chalk dress — scuba-inspired — from adidas by Stella McCartney. Check out this video from her photo shoot for the fall pieces. The gallery below also shows the photos released as part of the lookbook for the collection.
