Who knew that the Village Voice – the country’s largest culture and arts weekly newspaper – would be full of tennis tidbits this week? First off, there was some juicy gossip from columnist Michael Musto in his “Blind Item” piece this week. It’s sort of a tease of a tangent: when doing the “Blind Iteam” post, Mr. Musto writes about celebrities but doesn’t give away who it is. This one, however, certainly caught our (reading) eye:
Which hunky ’70s tennis star used to like three-ways with women, one of whom he would charmingly ask to insert a dildo in his butt? (I guess the other one kept score.)
Who could it be?! Ah, the guesses are endless. But who do you think it is?!
Meanwhile, in the Voice’s always-handy to-do’s for the week, we spotted a little write-up about the Bronx Open, a USTA-certified open (and ITF event) with $100,000 in cash prize. Among the competitors are Lucie Safarova, Anna Lena Groenefeld, Sania Mirza and American Vania King. Forget the qualies, this is where the real action will be prior to the Open!
A few players that won’t be in the Bronx, but rather in Queens the same week are the wild cards of the US Open qualifying draw. That list includes 16-year-old Ryan Harrison, 2008 US Open boy’s champ Grigor Dimitrov, Scoville Jenkins and Ryan Lipman, who was runner up in Kalamazoo last week.
