Russian Elena Dementieva had the misfortune of drawing a second-round match against Justine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open. While the Belgian’s skills (and prior Aussie Open record) should have given her a high seeding, the tour’s ranking/seeding process hasn’t yet adjusted for Justine’s 20-month absence (which recently ended when she un-retired at the beginning of the year).
Too bad for Dementieva, since she was coming into the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 title win over Serena Williams in Sydney. But we’re also not shocked, are we? Elena’s spent years and years flirting with her potential to be a trophy winner at a Slam, but something always seems to work against her (that serve, her head, a dark horse).
And there are a few other Russians hitting their stride this year., including Zvonareva, Kirilenko (squee!!), and Petrova (though Nadia can really be lumped in the same underachieving group as Dementieva). Will Elena be left in the dust, or is this her year to shine?
A demure dress: Compared to all the skimpy stuff she wore last year (hey, if I had gams like her, I’d wear the same!), the pale green Yonex dress seemed more proper. Or perhaps we’re all just distracted by Venus‘s second homage to Borat — who knows? Still, we love the white Vs breaking up the solid block of color (but could have lived without that waistband).
