From Cyprus, with love: Not that we ever gave him much ink as an adidas mascot, but worth noting that Marcos Baghdatis came to the Australian Open not wearing the company’s clothes — at least not openly. He’s replaced any visible logos with his own homage to Cyprus (there’s even a “Love Cyprus” badge on his left shoulder). As we mentioned earlier, he retired from his third-round match against Lleyton Hewitt.
Flavia of the month no longer: Meanwhile, Flavia Pennetta popped up for her Australian hardcourt swing in non-descript (and totally non-Tacchini) purple and white separates. Not sure where she’s headed next. FYI: Pennetta, as the 12th seed, got knocked out in the second round by Yanina Wickmayer. A minor upset, since Wickmayer would’ve been seeded 16th, but we all know that the Belgian was probably pissed (and warmed up by having to go through qualifying) and ready to take no prisoners.
