Just as we were coming down from the high of seeing Thom Browne‘s Spring 2009 tennis-themed show, Jean-Paul Gaultier takes the baton with his Spring 2010 presentation for Hermes, which sent models down a grass runway (complete with a tennis match in the background). Gaultier’s inspiration for the collection was a female player that Hermes outfitted in the 1930s.
“I don’t recall her name, I know nothing about tennis,” Gaultier told journalists as he mingled with guests after the show. “I saw a photo of her from the 20s or 30s, and I liked her silhouette, and I said ‘allez, let’s play tennis.'”
As delicious as Gaultier’s take on the classic tennis pieces (polos, pleated skirts, warm-up sweaters) was his sporty adaptation of the house’s iconic Birkin bag: a pocket for a racquet; a separate dangling sleeve for a ball can. Any bets on which pro will be first to carry that onto the court? (Anna Wintour? ALT?) What do you think of this collection? Tell us!

Does the Birkin have a racket-shaped pocket on the side? If so, I love it. Also, @maly, Serena would look like a gladiator in that outfit (in a good way).

Yep, I think there’s a pocket. Take a look at this pic:
