To add insult to injury (or is it injury to insult?), six athletic teams at Rutgers University are packing up in the next few weeks after being eliminated from the school’s roster because of Title IX.
The teams are men’s tennis, swimming, diving, lightweight and heavyweight crew, and men’s and women’s (!) fencing.
Save Rutgers Tennis lobbied and raised funds to help keep tennis afloat, but coudn’t convince the University otherwise. (See the multiple missives they posted on the site.)
The team played their last match on April 19, falling to St. Joseph’s 5-2.
From the Daily Targum, who spoke with head coach Mikey Cook about his tennis team:
“I thought the team did a great job staying focused,” Cook said. “If they didn’t play hard, they would have wasted the opportunity that they had. You only get so many years to play college tennis.”
To the team: CBHM hopes that you can find a new, equally-fulfilling outlet for your tennis.
