ljubicic’s sputter continues in metz

That Li Ning stallion — the brand associated with Ivan Ljubicic‘s kits from the Chinese company — isn’t helping him ride back up the ATP rankings. At this week’s Open de Moselle in Metz, the Croat, seeded third, was upset by Xavier Malisse 7-5, 6-2. And at the 2010 US Open, Ljubicic went out in the first round to Ryan Harrison. Uhm, what happened to the dude who won Indian Wells this year? (Info: Metz on the ATP site.)

More: Two other pictures of Ivan’s orange and brown kit (note that horse on the sleeve, and the orange shoes) after the cut…

malisse swings for sports center’s top 10 plays

Xavier Malisse pulled a trick out of the tennis bag last night in a first-set rally against Andy Roddick at the Atlanta Tennis Championships with an in-between the legs shot. Roddick was there to pounce at the net (click image above to watch the video), and the American won the match in three sets. The shot was #9 on Sports Center‘s Top 10 Plays reel from last night.

Delpo UPDATE: In Spanish on his Twitter account, Juan Martin del Potro told his fans: “I haven’t picked up a racquet yet so I can’t tell an exact date. When I know I’ll tell you the news here. I’m improving, that’s a good thing.” (Translation via Tennis-X blog.) Delpo musta read our timeline and decided it was time to clear things up.

I won’t turn down a facial from james blake!

First, some bits:

  • Saw Juan Martin del Potro up close and personal playing doubles with munchkin partner Fabio Fognini.
  • James Blake, who along with Frank Dancevic is a spokesguy for Evian, designed a facial spray bottle (“Brumisateur”) that’ll be sold throughout the U.S. Open Series. Pick it up at evian.com for $5.50.
  • Maria Sharapova is leaving the athlete haven that is Manhattan Beach for the much more celeb-appropriate Topanga Canyon.

Donald Young‘s white Nike Advantage Polo. See the subtle detail in the mesh backing. The 19-year-old took out Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-4 in the first night match.

Papparazi moved into the seats right behind me not during a changeover (boo) but waited until the changeover (yay) to start snapping pics of Kate Hudson, who sat next to Haas’ gf Sara Foster. Look at that bracelet!

Tommy had no less than three K-Swiss shirt changes, treating us to white/black and navy blue crewnecks plus a navy blue polo during the last game of the match.

Switcheroo: In case you didn’t notice — I didn’t until last night! — Xavier Malisse switched from K-Swiss to Lotto prior to Wimbledon. He wore the black Kontact tee with shiny screenprint against Carlos Moya. The Belgian had a shiny ring on his left middle finger to match.

The girls and boys warmed up for the start of the Australian Open with another week at various tournaments Down Under. The usual fare of crystal and silver were doled out, save for minikegs in Auckland…
