jankovic earned her fashion stripes

Not over yet: Serbian Jelena Jankovic could end her year on a high note — the rest of it hasn’t been the best (titles in Andalucia and Cincinnati; a finals appearance in Tokyo) — since she’s still jankovic earned her fashion stripesin the running for the 2009 Sony Ericsson Tour Championships, happening this week in Doha.

The tour’s final outing of 2009 brings out another outfit from the partnership between JJ and ANTA. This time, she let the fabric do the talking, staying away from complicated details and instead placing a monogram on the back of the pink wrap dress.

Scores: Jelena got shut down by Victoria Azarenka in their opening round robin, but rebounded with a win over Safina (well, Dinara withdrew with a back injury) and Caroline Wozniacki. In case you’re actually following the results…

elena’s little black dress

Elena Dementieva played in her eighth WTA Tour Championships — dating all the way back to 2000 — wearing a little black dress from Yonex. Way to show off those gams!

The Russian failed to make it out of the event’s round robin stage, winning her match against Venus Williams but losing to Serena and Kuznetsova.

Looking ahead: In the semis, Venus will play Jelena Jankovic and Serena will go up against Caroline Wozniacki. In doubles, the team of Cara Black/Liezel Huber will vie for a spot in the final, and Stosur/Stubbs will try to down the second-seeded Williams sisters. More: Scores here.

this is how you do it: doha edition

Tournament organizers in doubt about how to stage a draw ceremony can now use the 2009 SEWTA Tour Championships as a reference.

They dolled up the ladies, threw them in the Museum of Islamic Art, and snapped away. The results? Venus gets our vote for “Best Style”, Elena gets “Most Glam”, and we are all about Azarenka‘s big bow. (Is that you, Blake Lively?)

Who was your fave?

dressing up doha

Fila expands its apparel/footwear sponsorships (Wimbledon, Indian Wells, Miami) by adding the SEWTA’s Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha to its roster.

The event’ll feature the top eight singles players and the top four doubles players, all competing over six days for prize money totaling $4.55 million. Five ladies have qualified for singles so far: Safina, Serena, Wozniacki, Dementieva, and Kuznetsova. Get more info about the tournament here.

Fila created a bespoke range for Doha that draws inspiration from the event’s purple and green theme as well as Fila’s 70′s and 80′s archive. The clothes will be seen on court officials, ball crew, and on-site staff.

at the year-end party, maria shines in thakoon

You know Maria Sharapova wasn’t too bummed about being runner-up to Justine Henin at last week’s Year-End Championships in Madrid.

She sat out for almost two months to nurse her ailing shoulder, and in the meantime cleaned out the skeleton in her closet by auctionining off that cursed U.S. Open day dress. The result? A sexy librarian look from Nike and a kick-ass serve that got her a $500,000 check for second-place.

To celebrate after the long match (and a long year), Maria attended the tournament’s players’ party dressed in the metallic orange Thakoon frock and a pair of black t-strap platforms by Lanvin.
