eyes on the dc

While the Israel-Sweden tie has certainly brought a frown to our faces, you can’t help but love Davis Cup weekend. Check out some of the scenes from Day One of the year’s first DC weekend.

Advantage, apparel: Lacoste was a winner in Birmingham, Alabama, where alligator-clad Stanislas Wawrinka and Andy Roddick were victorious for their respective countries to draw the tie even at 1-1.

k-swiss makes tommy haas a bamboo shirt

tommy-haas-dubai-spr08.jpg

It seems that K-Swiss and Limited Sports get to share the hunky walking billboard that is Tommy Haas.

The German company’s monogrammed hat and wristbands are hanging around (we thought they were lost forever!) while K-Swiss outfits Tommy with the Bamboo Side Print Crew. Yep, it’s a shirt that’s 66% bamboo. Apparently, the plant’s fibers have good moisture-wicking and antibacterial qualities.

Scoreline: Haas lost to David Ferrer 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the Dubai tournament.

Buy: K-Swiss Bamboo Shirt, $36.99.

Luis Horna (left) and Agustin Calleri squared off at last week’s Copa Telmex in Buenos AIres.

Horna, in Reebok, put on a simple silver necklace, while Calleri, in Diadora, had on a wristband with thick, monochrome vertical stripes.

(BTW, Calleri beat Horna 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.)

nadal gets the star treatment

There’s definitely someone at Nike taking care of Rafael Nadal. Of all the folks wearing this exact same Global Power Sleeveless Tank at this week’s Mutua Madrilena Masters — including Carlos Moya, Feliciano Lopez, Stefan Koubek — Rafa was the only one who made it work.

The key lies in the colors: the white headbands and the grey shorts worn Moya and Lopez wash out the shirt. On the other hand, Nadal’s light blue accessories mute the Dark Crystal Blue tank at the same time that his black Global Power Board Shorts help the same blue stand out.

(And it didn’t help the others that they were occasionally still wearing the same tank in the less-vibrant Argon blue shade from Fall ’07)

Buy: Board Shorts are $55 and the Global Power Sleeveless Tank is $55; both available at Midwest Sports.

feliciano lopez - madrid masters - wristband

Unlike the guy who threw up ALL OVER the bus this morning, TSF ralphed just a little bit at the sight of Feliciano Lopez‘s mismatched ensemble — yes, his delicious lips and his chiseled left arm can only do so much — but we’ll cut him some slack this week: the Spaniard’s playing in his home tourney after all, so it’s cool for him to pair his Dark Crystal Blue Global Power tank with a yellow and red Nike wristband.

Feli won his first round, all-Spanish battle against David Ferrer 7-6 (3), 7-5.

p.s. He also wore this cute wristband to a Davis Cup tie last year.
