spotted in the city: vintage does 2010

TSF is introducing a new series of posts that we’re calling “spotted in the city”. These posts will be full of the random stuff that your TSF editors come across in the daily world of New York and Los Angeles. From shoe sightings on the street to storefronts to a tennis celeb on the pavement, we’re ready with our low-quality cell phone cameras to capture tennis fashion off the courts. See something you think might work for the series? Snap a pic and send us a note! The best part is you don’t have to be in NYC or LA… or any city for that matter! Tennis fashion is happening all over the place, and  we always love to hear from our readers. -NM

We spotted this vintage HEAD tennis racquet and cover at a Housing Works Thrift Shop in SoHo a few weeks ago. The thing was going for $6. The strings were intact and the grip felt good. We’re a little disappointed we didn’t swipe it for leisure play with friends this fall! Remember: another HEAD sighting in SoHo, earlier this year. (Full disclosure: I work for Housing Works, Inc.)

The back wall at the Boast party this past week in NoHo was covered in stylish, old-school photos aplenty. The re-launch party – cleverly tagged “Back in play” – was at the art space 40 Great Jones.

A model holds court (or street) outside the Boast party in NoHo. She was sipping on a Southside cocktail – oh so delicious!

fashion focus: vintage bollettieri

nike-bollettieri.jpg

Staring into the shades of the leathery Nick Bollettieri, I never would’ve thought he and Nike could come up with such awesome 80s fashion. Just look at that sweatshirt.

Bid on it: It’s up for auction on eBay (starting bid: $15), along with a version that’s neon green instead of orange.

fashion flashback: nike's agassi tees

While you might be falling asleep at your computer while browsing the Andre Agassi collection for adidas, let’s not forget that Nike had a cash cow on their hands back in Andre’s heyday.

Here are some eBay listings from the past year which featured vintage pieces from this line.

agassi-nike-vintage.jpg

First up are the Challenge Court T-shirts. It doesn’t get any more retro than this (if it’s the 90s we’re talking about). I feel like I’m watching the theme sequence from Saved by the Bell. The second one from the right says “Agassi’s Rock & Roll Tennis Camp”, and the one on the left says “‘That Oughta Wake-up the Country Club'” [sic]. All the listings, now expired, are here.

And this is a delicious windbreaker from the same vendor.

It seems like Nike’s been heading — successfully — in that direction (with Rafa’s orange warm-up from the grass season and all those big logo throwbacks). But there have also been some missteps. Remember Fire & Ice?

fashion: more than just underwear…

I assure you I am capable of discussing things other than Djokovic‘s chones

Stay tuned for Borg and Fila: I’ll have my hands on pics from the Bjorn Borg spring/summer ’08 collection (that’s underwear AND swimwear) very soon. Also, word about Fila‘s new clothing line (one that’s even better than their Settantatre collection, I’ve been told) should pop up at any time. I’ll let you know when it does.

Kournikova’s next move: First, can we stop talking about Anna Kournikova‘s lack of singles titles already? She’s still an accomplished tennis player with TWO Grand Slam doubles titles under her belt.

Ads: The Russian starlet — who’s currently the tennis face of K-Swiss, poses in these print ads for the SoCal-based sporting goods company. I love the Fila-esque play on red, white, and blue. (via RightFielders)

A new clothing line: Kournikova announced at the Rogers Cup this week (she’s there playing an exhibition) that her K-Swiss yoga/tennis/gym collection — “it will basically be stuff that you can be in the gym in and then go to a coffee shop in” — will drop in 2008. I can’t wait to see all the muffin tops at my local Coffee Bean!!! (via DTL)

Vintage vision: The folks at Nike continue to raid their archives for this season’s looks, and DTL continues to obsess.

My next mission: Former Vogue Hommes International EIC Bruno Danto is hard at work to bring his Sport & Style magazine to New York. The book, currently distributed in France, Dubai, and China, is “a lifestyle title that harmoniously blends fashion with athletics.” If someone sees an issue, please let me know. (via DTL)

Racqonteur’s dirty work: Editrix (and tennis fan) Anna Wintour gives the sport its fair share of ink in the September issue of Vogue. Sister (brother?) publication Men’s Vogue does the same. (Racqonteur)

Speaking of magazines: Portfolio, Condé Nast’s new business mag, profiles François-Henri Pinault aka Salma Hayek’s baby daddy and the newest owner of Puma. Also, as head of the Gucci Group, Pinault rocked the fashion world by booting Tom Ford from Gucci and proved naysayers wrong by growing that brand (along with YSL and Bottega Venetta) even without a celebrity designer.

I don’t know about you, but the Portfolio website reminds me of Monocle‘s.

fashion: borg s/s ’07, bec hewitt = designer, stella mccartney f/w ’07, MORE MARC JACOBS!!!

Bjorn Borg s/s ’07 picks: My faves from the most recent Bjorn Borg collection… Top row (left to right): the Joppe tank, the Slip-On shoe, Luka tee; bottom row: Rustan jacket, Samuel scarf, and Custom bag. Scope out all the goods here.

Bec Hewitt branches out: The stylish wife of Aussie Lleyton Hewitt (and mother to their lovely daughter Mia) takes a stab at children’s fashion by launching her own line, called Bec Kidz. She’ll collaborate with designer Bruno Schiavi on the designs. (Herald Sun via DTL)

Vintage Gucci: Cut out the middleman and get your hands on an old school Gucci tennis bag on eBay. (Racqonteur)

adidas by Stella McCartney: Amid the frenzy of putting together an event to close out London’s next fashion week, Stella McCartney has also released the latest collection for adidas by Stella McCartney. The f/w ’07 colors are Bronco (a pink/brown shade), Dark Bronco, White, and Electricity (lime green).

Picks: I especially love the Track Top (top row, middle), which is basically a crop warm-up; and the Tank (bottom, middle), with it’s “delicate” double-strap detail. Of course, double strap means that it’s going for a layered look without the actual layers…

The Gym Dance collection, another adidas by Stella McCartney line, will make its way to the public soon. Check out High Snobiety’s preview here. (via DTL)

florida memory project: a hot nastase bag

In honor of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Tournament in Miami (March 21-April 1), I’m unearthing some photos from the Florida Memory Project. Here’s one with a sexy Ilie Nastase.

I know tennis bags aren’t made like that any more (for orthopedic reasons, I’m sure), but someone — Tommy Robredo, are you reading this? — can raid a vintage store or two and put these back on the style map!
