trophy watch: a bonus trophy for the ladies in doha

Nadia Petrova holds Diamond Ball trophy - Qatar Total Open 2013 -

A Girl’s Best Friend: The organizers of the Qatar Total Open 2013 in Doha are a bit more excited about this year’s draw, with the possibility of the Diamond Ball trophy being awarded at the end of the week. The secondary trophy can go to a player who wins the Qatar Total Open three times. Both Maria Sharapova and Nadia Petrova have each hoisted two Total Open trophies; Sharapova won Doha both in 2005 and 2008, while Petrova won Total Open titles in 2006 — in Doha and Berlin.

Trophy Watch: This isn’t the first time a special trophy’s been awarded to three-time winners. The Proximus Diamond Games, held for most of the 00′s in Antwerp, handed out a bedazzled racquet to Amelie Mauresmo.

Doha: Save for a few early dropouts in Kirilenko and Sloane Stephens — and breakthroughs in Barthel (over Kerber) and  McHale (over Safarova), it’s biz as usual. Results, draws, and orders of play available at the Qatar Total Open website.

going home: open sud de france, vtr open, pbz zagreb indoors

Going home: TSF’s screengrabs of tennis tournament homepages and websites.

Nothing of note to report from the sites of the three ATP events running this week (while the women take a break for Fed Cup play): the Open Sud de France (Montpellier, France) has a solid photo gallery and video section. We are dying to know what’s going on with this segment on tennis-themed art. Alas, it’s only in French, so we can’t take advantage; we suggest adding subtitles for next year’s videos.

The VTR Open (Vina del Mar, Chile) is pretty much letting Rafael Nadal‘s return to the ATP Tour do all the talking; the Chileans are keeping a straightforward web presence.

The PBZ Zagreb Indoors, with its genius square root logo, mixes it up with some bright colors and a fun, throwaway memory game based a tournament ad.

espn2 australian open tv commercial: “tennis down under”

ESPN2 TV commercial - 2013 Australian Open

As if we weren’t already loopy from all the overnight shifts to cover the Australian Open, this commercial promoting ESPN2′s coverage of the the 2013 Melbourne event is sending us over the edge. The graphics play on how everything’s upside down (under) in the Southern Hemisphere. We love it.

who’s in bed with jarmila gajdosova?

Ahh, nothing better than using YouTube as DIY therapy, no? (See what wonders it did for that UCLA student de-stressing before finals!). In the case of the recently divorced Jarmila Gajdosova, it gets a little creeeeepy as she professes her feelings for her true love from across that California King Bed.

On the flip side, we like it when people can make light of super-serious situations.

players manage balancing act while prepping for nyc’s big show

RalphLauren.com pulled out all the stops on Thursday afternoon for an event featuring Venus Williams, in which Venus took questions from online submissions from around the world in a live clinic. At the Sportime Randall’s Island tennis center in New York, Venus was on court for the first time in a public setting since her eyebrow-raising loss to Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. But instead of thwacking errors and a look of confusion, Venus was all smiles and tennis knowledge in the clinic, which was hosted by the British TV personality (and former player) Annabel Croft.

Venus, who is the no. 3 seed at the US Open and one of the favorites though she hasn’t been on tour in two months, talked fitness, forehands and gave plenty of tennis tips from her 26 years of experience on the court. The event was hosted by Ralph Lauren and Mercedes Benz, based on RL’s homepage for viewers to log in and watch live while Venus answered questions relayed by Croft. (Watch a full replay of the clinic here or click on the image after the jump.)

“It’s good for me to remember the basics when I’m about to play a big tournament,” Venus said, referring to the Open. Venus partnered with Ralph Lauren in the design of the dress she wore, a white number emblazoned with the logo of Eleven, Venus’s clothing line.

Guests were greeted with sweet mint tea, pistachio ice cream sandwiches and caramelized popcorn on the upper deck at Randall’s Island, which hosts the New York Sportimes during the World Team Tennis seasons. Male models clad in red Ralph Lauren polos dished out the goods as Venus strode through the crowd on her way to hair and make up (this was a live, online clinic, after all).

The clinic was a part of a myriad of events happening in New York this week, which all lead up to the big show at Flushing Meadows starting on Monday.
