andy roddick’s terra cotta twin lands in austin

Andy Roddick Foundation - Terra Cotta warrior

The Andy Roddick Foundation has finished its moved to Austin, Texas, now that the American’s hung up his racquet for good. One of the final things to make the trek from Boca Raton was Andy’s likeness as a Chinese terra cotta warrior, made up as a promotional campaign for the ATP Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai back in 2007. But secretly we want to know what happened to the warrior they made up for Nikolay Davydenko.

(Flashback: TSF’s interview with artist Laury Dizengremel about creating the warriors.)

Save the Date: The ARF will host its 2013 ARF Celebrity Golf Classic April 14-15, 2013, including a Bogey Down Dinner (get it?) “with Andy & Friends.”

picoooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Fuzzy wuzzy Juan Monaco is through to the final four at this week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters after beating Jurgen Melzer 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-2 in the quarters. (Sadly, Jurgen was probably pooped out after upsetting Rafa Nadal in the round prior.)

Looking forward: Monaco next faces Andy Murray, who won over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The other semi will feature Roger Federer (d. Soderling) and Novak Djokovic (d. Gigi Lopez).

The clothes: As we saw in person at the US Open, we’re much more a fan of the grey and purple version of this fall’s Edge line from adidas.

Buy: Fall Edge Theme Top (assymetrical), $39; Crew, $35; Shorts, $35; in Deepest Ink (grey), Ultra Beauty (fuschia), and white; all at TW.

We’re lovin’ the Chinese characters for “Shanghai” painted on the courts at this week’s Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Draw: Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker beat Fernando Verdasco in the first round. He next plays fellow adidas man Juan Monaco. (Draw: Singles.)

Even with Roger Federer‘s late-2007 hiccup (which saw him lose back-to-back matches for the first time since 2003), the Swiss and World No. 1 came out on top this year.

He beat sixth seed David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 to win his fourth Tennis Masters Cup title in five years.

Another record: Roger collected $1.2 million and a Mercedes-Benz C-Class for the win, putting his 2007 prize money pot at $10 million plus — an ATP record.

Earlier in the week, Federer also picked up another trophy by clinching the year-end No. 1 spot for the fourth year in a row.

wearing red didn’t help their luck

The slippery slides of Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko couldn’t be helped by the good luck, in Chinese culture, brought by wearing red. Both are playing in their first round-robin matches at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai this week.

Andy Roddick (in Lacoste) beat Kolya (in white/red Airness) in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 match. The American (is that ok with you, Shain?) had a second-set blip that left him throwing down his racquet, but found his mojo in time to make a run of five straight games in the third set to go up 5-1.

Meanwhile, R-Fed suffered his first back-to-back loss since Hamburg/Roland Garros in 2003. This year, he lost in the third round of the Paris Masters Series to David Nalbandian, and in this first round-robin match in Shanghai against Fernando Gonzalez, who notched his first win against Federer in 11 tries. The scoreline: 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
