mishit: mattek-sands and allaster ring nyse bell

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Stacey Allaster ring NYSE bell 2013

Purple, like the logo: Not sure if Bethanie Mattek-Sands is the WTAer I’dve taken with me to the NYSE to ring the opening bell, Ms. Allaster. Is this the image we want to project to the world about who is playing tennis these days? I guess we can mix things up, seeing that Serena Williams and Vika Azarenka got a chance to thank SAP when that data partnership was announced in Cincinnati (Western & Southern Open).

memphis: istomin ousts isner

Denis Istomin ousts John Isner in Memphis

Memphis: Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin gets a full two snaps for his takedown of John Isner in the first round of the U.S. National Indoor Championships, held this week in Memphis. Istomin, who beat the American in straight sets, next faces Lleyton Hewitt, and shares that bottom half of the draw with last week’s finalists in San Jose: Milos Raonic and Tommy Haas. Meanwhile, everything’s looking dandy for a semifinal clash between top seed Marin Cilic and fourth seed Sam Querrey. (Draw: Memphis Men’s Singles)

Mishit: We’re handing out demerits with this get-up though. In head-to-toe Lotto, he’s channeling some Wayne Knight circa Jurassic Park.

oh, shahar!

It’s been a while since we’ve put up a fashion mishit — nay, a fashion shank — on TSF, but this one caught our eye. Too bad, because we were in the middle of writing a post praising Shahar Peer‘s current purple Reebok dress, and this had to pop up: a pic from last month’s BNP Paribas Open Players’ Party. That sock tan! And are those loafers?

TSF Archives: Previous mishits on and off the court — including Jankovic‘s pink bow, Spadea‘s leopard print backpack, and a lot of Mattek.

On the tour: Shahar’s done decently this year, ranked just outside the top 10 and with two quarterfinal appearances (Dubai, Indian Wells). She lost in her opening round match at this week’s Sony Ericsson Open to Anabel Medina Garrigues. As you may know, AMG gave Sharapova trouble in Masha’s opening match at Indian Wells.

chris’ note to james blake

Dear James Blake,

Why dont you try complaining about the ATP World Tour calendar when you’re winning and having to play a lot more (instead of when you’re losing)? It shouldn’t matter now that you have two weeks off! When was the last time you sucked at your job and were given two weeks paid vacay? Maybe you could use the time off editing all the spelling errors in your book!

xo,

C

Scoreline: The Fila-clad 17th-seed lost to Andreas Seppi 5-7, 4-6, 6-7 (5) in the first round of Wimbledon singles, 2009.

Buy: Fila Essenza Crew Neck Top, $45, fila.com. (C’mon, James — you looked so crisp and clean in that Nike polo you wore to Wimbledon last year. I’m sure you can drum up the same look with Fila!)

some of these things are not like the others

India’s Olympic contingent couldn’t get it together for their opening march into the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing today.

From the Press Trust of India:

“With ace shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore carrying the tri-colour, the contingent looked good from a distance but as they came closer things looked hardly impressive.

The male members of the team were dressed in off-white sherwanis but the tennis duo of Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao were attired in black trousers and practice jackets. Not only did the two not follow the dress code, the contrast was even more jarring to the eyes when they walked with Delhi paddler Neha Aggarwal who chose a greenish saree for the occasion.

Most of the Indian competitors also did not march smartly, Rathore, tennis ace Leander Paes and shooter Gagan Narang being the exceptions.

Though, the generous crowd at the Bird’s Nest stadium roared to greet the Indians, it was a shoddy fashion statement by the team.”

Instead of patting James Blake on the back for being an American who makes it past the first round of the French Open — he beat Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (3) — take that hand and just smack him upside the head. This Nike Summer Global Power Crew is in the running for most boring outfit of the fortnight!
