oh, mirka!

Here’s Mirka Federer sitting with Gwen Stefani while watching hubby the fourth round between her hubby Roger and TSF bathroom buddy (and bartender!) Jurgen Melzer. Gwen looks fab as always, with the houndstooth pants and those lime green nails (which match Caro‘s adidas by Stella McCartney dress!).

Fashion Week: For those interested, L.A.M.B. will be presenting its Spring/Sumer 2011 collection on Sept. 16 as part of New York Fashion Week. View the full schedule here.

Tennis wives …and girlfriend: As we move into the second week, the roster of glam wives and gfs are still intact, with Mirka Vavrinec, Kim Sears, Bec Hewitt, and Brooklyn Decker rooting for their respective men.

Hewitt still in it: We were convinced that the grueling match between Lleyton Hewitt and Gael Monfils resulted in an upset (yes, we are that cynical), but the 15th-seed (and former champ) won in three sets and will face Nole Djokovic in the fourth round.

Mirka recycles: On Mirka’s an old-school shoulder bag from Louis Vuitton‘s Antigua collection. Husband Federer barely broke a sweat against Nono Clement. He next plays 2010 French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer.

Brooklyn relaxes: Mrs. Roddick already has her major title of 2010 in the bag, so now it’s Andy’s turn to produce. He’s up against the sleeper Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu in the round of 16.

Kim steps up: With all eyes on her boyfriend (even the Queen!), Sears has done a good job of mixing up her outfits worn to watch Murray play: off-the-shoulder black for the warm-up against Jan Hajek; a floral print dress for the second round against Nieminen; a big colorful necklace for the third-rounder with Gilles Simon.

Draw: See the 2010 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Draw here.

short balls: thoughts from miami

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Now we are seeing where Jada gets that hair. We were starting to wonder a little… (WTA photo via web site)

The past couple weeks were full of tennis glamour in Miami, and Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters came away from the beaches of Florida with smiles on their faces as they won big-time titles in impressive fashion. We’ve got to hand it to Roddick for continuing to change his game and try to break the top crop of the ATP Tour. Wimbledon 2009 may not have been his final stand in a Major. We’ll stay tuned.

Measuring Beauty: A New York Times article out yesterday touched on feminine beauty taking on a new role as Baylor star basketball player Brittney Griner becomes a household name. Griner stands 6 feet, 8 inches, and has had her sexuality – and gender identity – questioned. But even Stella McCartney insiders recognized her unique look as gorgeous, the article says.

Oh-des-don’t! Things are looking rather bleak for Wayne Odesnik’s tennis future after news broke that vials of human growth hormones were found in his luggage in Australia. Want the full story? Bonnie D. Ford has a tremendous summary here, complete with quotes from other American players. Wondering why Odes is still playing in Houston this week? The charges against him are being investigated and no formal ATP rulings have been made.

Robson, Mississippi: A few hundred miles away from Wayne-mania in Houston, Britain’s Laura Robson is playing in her first event since making the junior final at the Australian Open. Robson joins top-seeded American Lindsay Lee-Waters and second seed Julia Cohen in Jackson, Mississippi for the 25K ITF circuit event.

An unexpected Miami trio and more after the cut. [Read more...]

tgif: doha already?! and two-faced funnies after the jump

Can you believe Doha starts next week?! We certainly can’t. The drama of the WTA has certainly followed the US Open; it seems this tour can’t live without it. Lasting just until the SECs are to begin, the drama lived on when another bizarre instance occurred in Luxembourg this week as Caroline Wozniacki pulled out of her first-round match leading 7-5, 5-0. Her reasoning? She was injured and wanted to let her opponent (hometown girl Anne Kremer) play in the next round, which Caro didn’t think she could do physically.

Good gesture, we say. Her reward? Accusations of throwing the match. Betfair politics. Tennis gambling. And an investigation, oh my! It also clunked her record to 3-4 since her inspiring run at Flushing Meadows. Ho hum.

Another US Open inspiree, Yanina Wickmayer, has had opposite fortunes since leaving NYC. She’s 6-1 on tour and is still in action in Luxembourg. A player to watch in 2010? We think so.

A writer we’re watching this week is Bobby Chintapalli, who penned the Doha preview for Peter Bodo’s TennisWorld. Not only did the BC come up with some solid and intriguing stats for the piece, we’re jealous of the made-up nickname used for the wave of Eastern European players of the WTA Tour: Mynameis Somethingpova.

Two snaps for Bobby, whose online writing profile says, “I love tennis. I love writing. I love cupcakes.” Well put BC, well put. Hungry now? Check out NYC’s “Best Cupcake” according to the Village Voice.

And it wouldn’t be Friday without a little fun, this time in the form of a little Look-Alike action. Check the jump to see just who in tennis has a twin (or two) out there. [Read more...]

tit for tat: federer at armani

Which dress will Mama Mirka wear?

Anna Wintour was flanked by Roger Federer and Mirka Vavrinec as she walked into the Giorgio Armani Spring 2010 show in Milan. The trio sat front row (of course!); so did Janet Jackson.

“Giorgio is a real class act,” Federer told FWD‘s Valentine Uhovski after the show. “He’s just a legend. We didn’t expect the show to be such a spectacle but I had a week off, so why not? And Giorgio saw me play my country, now I’m in his.”

oh, mirka!

All smiles: Lovely shades, dear. If I had a rock like yours, I’d shield my eyes just like how you’re doing.

Phew: Now that Rafa Nadal has fallen to Robin Soderling, Mirka can get a proper manicure — she won’t be bitin’ on those fingernails for the rest of the week! Another pic of Mirka Vavrinec, aka Mrs. Roger Federer, taking in her hubby’s run for a title at the French Open, after the cut…

oh, mirka!

Here’s Gwen Stefani with son Zuma (in his Burberry check bloomers, of course) sitting next to Mirka Vavrinec during Roger Federer‘s fourth round match vs. Gonzalez at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Be patient, Mirks — you’ll have your own baby soon enough! By the way, TSF’s been wondering: will you be picking up a Silver Cross (though be careful, you might end up mired in a legal mess), or is Marc Jacobs already working on your monogrammed Louis Vuitton baby carriage?

Another pic of Gwen and Zuma here.
