andy roddick’s terra cotta twin lands in austin

Andy Roddick Foundation - Terra Cotta warrior

The Andy Roddick Foundation has finished its moved to Austin, Texas, now that the American’s hung up his racquet for good. One of the final things to make the trek from Boca Raton was Andy’s likeness as a Chinese terra cotta warrior, made up as a promotional campaign for the ATP Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai back in 2007. But secretly we want to know what happened to the warrior they made up for Nikolay Davydenko.

(Flashback: TSF’s interview with artist Laury Dizengremel about creating the warriors.)

Save the Date: The ARF will host its 2013 ARF Celebrity Golf Classic April 14-15, 2013, including a Bogey Down Dinner (get it?) “with Andy & Friends.”

big brother nole

It’s almost a little creepy how omnipresent Nole is at the Serbia Open, no? Even when he’s not around, there’s a statue to take his place. If you remember, this is the terra cotta replica commissioned by the ATP for the players participating in the 2007 year-end championships. (Flashback: See all eight statues — for Nole, Ferrer, Federer, Gonzo, Kolya, Rafa, Gasquet, and Roddick)

Work it: All the Serbia Open fashion show pics here.

Work it: The singles draw has Nole, Troicki, GG Lopez, Montanes, Isner, Gulbis, Janko, and Pico as the top eight seeds. Draw: Serbia Open.

putting terra cotta to good use

Lest you thought those ATP terra cotta warriors — created by Laury Dizengremel for the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup — were languishing in storage (or were being used to plug leaks in the Three Gorges Dam), I can assure you that the statues are being put to good use. They’re making appearances at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club for this year’s Wimbledon tournament.

laury dizengremel commission - terra cotta warriors

Artist Laury Dizengremel, commissioned to work on these pieces, wrote to TSF two weeks ago from China.

“This [project] is a very exciting commission,” she said. “I’ve been to China 16 times over the last 6 years (am here right now creating the last few ‘heads’ as they qualify, working with two Chinese sculptor friends). I have made several monumental sculptures as a guest of the government, toured the country extensively for research, and love China!”
