trophy watch, exo edition: jb group classic and hopman cup

Forgive us for being a week behind with the trophies from last week’s exhibitions (Hopman Cup and the ladies’ JB Group Classic). But the Hopman trophy is cool, so here we go…

First, the Hopman Cup, won by the American team of Serena and Mardy over injured Serbians Jelena and Nole.

Team USA also went home (or to Melbourne, I guess) with these diamond-encrusted tennis balls. According to ABC, a new design by Doris Brinkhaus is conjured up each year, always with an Australian map and a diamond marking Perth’s location. It takes 8 months to construct.

The balls cost $35,000 each. The last one Serena won (back in 2003) ended up a gift to her mother, Oracene.

Venus Williams started off strong in 2008 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Maria Sharapova in the finals of the JB Group Classic on January 5.

fashion flashback: tati longstocking

Tatiana Golovin has gone back to solids for the early part of the Australian summer hardcourts, pairing pigtails with Lacoste pink and tennis pleats (cute!) at last week’s Hopman Cup. And she looked even better sharing the court with fellow Crocodile Nono Clement (photos here).

Can’t wait to see what Tati will wear for the Australian Open. I guess we’ll find out in a few days…

fashion focus: another buff from arnaud clement

Frenchman Arnaud Clement‘s trademark look gets another log in our bandana book at this week’s Hopman Cup. Here he is playing the men’s singles match against team Taiwan.

Lovin’ the thin yellow bracelet, and for those wondering about the honeycomb kicks, they’re from Lacoste‘s Repel line.

FYI: His team (with partner Tatiana Golovin) placed second in their respective group. They did not make it to the finals. No trophy, but they at least got to attend a kick-ass party.

New Year’s Day landed smack-dab in the middle of the 2008 Hopman Cup calendar, so there was no doubt that they’d throw a good party to celebrate.

This year’s organizers chose a nautical theme, with 750 guests boarding the “Hopman Princess” for the gala. Tournament Director Paul McNamee surprised everyone with his Love Boat attire (a costume he kept under wraps, even to his wife). To those who came in more formal garb, like French team member Arnaud Clement (above), they provided leis to spice up the crowd.

Of course, no tennis gala would be complete without its charity component. This event’s beneficiaries were the Variety Club and the Kids Tennis Foundation, who’ll split the 35K raised from an auction (items bid on: racquets from Serena Williams and Roger Federer, original artwork from Martina Navratilova and Juraj Kralik, a 2008 Australian Open package, etc.).

Scores: The Serbians (after beating Argentinians Gisela Dulko and Juan Ignacio Chela) will face Mardy Fish and Serena in the final. The Americans won in the semis over Alicia Molik and Peter Luczak. Jelena suffered an upper leg strain in an early match and hasn’t quite recovered. Meanwhile, Nole’s back problems have carried over from last season. Who’s going to take the title?

serena's oz open series – nike

Serena‘s delayed debut at the Hopman Cup has her in Nike‘s early spring colors — that’s Dark Stone (brown) and Red Grape. She teams with Mardy Fish to beat the Czech team, lovebirds Safarova and Berdych.

Results: This match-up was a cakewalk for the Americans; Safarova lost in three sets to Serena, while Berdych retired from the mixed doubles match because of a stomach flu (and also forfeited his singles match against Fish). Next thing you know, the Americans move forward with a 3-0 win.

Buy: The Nike goods in these new colors will be available very soon (January). Hang tight, ladies…
