lydia hearst + puma = more lydia bags!

As we mentioned back in June, Puma has revisited its partnership with model Lydia Hearst to release another round of Lydia bags — a designer take on the racquet grip bag from the company’s French 77 line. The unveiling happened at Puma’s Union Square store yesterday.

Unlike the limited-edition bag Ms. Hearst designed with Heatherette back in February (that’s her above, left), this round of bags runs $125 a pop and is constructed from eco-friendly materials (read: no leather). That earlier version was made of custom leather; most of 100 were given away to friends of Hearst, and the leftovers went on sale for $500 each.

So how did Hearst feel designing for the masses? “It’s much easier to create a high-end bag than a mass market bag that everyone can afford,” she shared with WWD. “But by looking at the bag, you wouldn’t know it’s mass market. I wanted to make sure anyone and everybody can enjoy my designs.”

Here’s a photo of former rentboy (and Marc Jacobs‘ ex) Jason Preston. And a photo of what the Union Square store.

The bag comes in two colorways: black/bright blue and silver. They go on sale on Friday at Puma concept stores. (Edit: Buy the bag here.)

More to come: Hearst and Puma will also team up for an eco-friendly activewear line to launch in the fall of 2008.

fashionistas: puma and lydia hearst team up again

To those who could not get their hands on the hundred or so limited edition Lydia Bags from earlier this year: fear not. (I’m talking to you, too, Britney.) Puma and Ms. Hearst are teaming up for another round of patchwork bags. (We hope Heatherette will be back to help with the designs.)

This time, they’re making it available to us common folk for $100 a pop. Prior to this, the closest we could get to the Lydia was the company’s Racket Grip Bag (a part of the French 77 line).

DIY: If you’re feeling like you can channel your inner publishing heiress, grab your glue gun and bedazzler, buy your blank canvas, and create your own Lydia. Send me photos!

I wonder if people actually use this bag to carry racquets. What do you think?

Puma has finally released the much anticipated Guillermo Vilas-inspired French 77 line this month, and I’m sad to say that except for a cute few items, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Why give us something that Stella McCartney‘s pretty much done for adidas? (Read the rest of the entry…)

A new Puma line called French 77, inspired by the wardrobe of the playboy, will launch in April. From Businesswire:

The PUMA Lydia Bag by Heatherette comes in three colors: “Delicate,” “Night” and “Wild.” Only 100 bags will be made, with most bags given to personal friends of Hearst. A very limited number of bags will be available exclusively at The PUMA Black Stores in New York City’s Meatpacking District and Tokyo beginning in May. Hearst will also auction the PUMA Lydia Bag by Heatherette at the Designers for Darfur Charity on February 9th during an event in which Hearst serves as the co-chair.
