Lindsay’s GS sched: Lindsay Davenport, this week competing at the ASB Classic, has committed to play only through the U.S. Open, and has announced that she won’t participate in this year’s French Open. (TNZH)

Santoro to break a record: Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, this week playing at the Qatar Open, will break a record he currently holds with Andre Agassi — that of appearing in 61 Grand Slam tournaments. Santoro will participate in his 62nd at the 2008 Australian Open. FYI, his first Grand Slam appearance was at the 1989 French Open. (CNN.com)

Ladies, take notice: Serena Williams came back from the off-season looking fit and trim. This could spell trouble for anyone else trying to win the Australian Open women’s titles (in both singles AND doubles) this year.

navratilova teams with aarp

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has agreed to be AARP‘s first Health and Fitness ambassador, and in the process will share tips with AARP members in online chats, conduct Q&As and video segments on the group’s fitness website, and speak at events.

This deal, along with ones from Subaru and Prince, makes Martina’s current endorsement portfolio larger than the one she had while playing on the WTA Tour (as an out lesbian).

While there is a trend towards signing retired professionals (with solid Q Ratings) in the wake of scandals (steroids, or Michael Vick‘s dogfighting ring), Navratilova points out that retired female athletes are still getting the short end of the stick. “Once you hit 30, the agents lose interest and the advertisers lose interest — they start looking for the next starlet,” she tells WSJ. “Let’s just say I’m still waiting to get a call from Wheaties.”

Reality bites: In response to Mahesh Bhupathi advising Sania Mirza to “concentrate on her physical abilities and training methods to prevent injury rather than to cure them,” she says:

Injuries happen to everyone. I mean Sharapova has struggled with so many injuries this year. Also Indians are not genetically as tough as the Europeans are. We are not cut out to be in a totally physical sport. That’s a fact. A lot of people may disagree with me but I still believe that. And because of that we have to push our bodies a lot more. And hence if you are going to punish your bodies everyday I don’t think then it’s humanly possible to remain injury free. I lost three months this year because of my knee but that is something which happened when I was the fittest. (CNN-IBN)

While CNBC’s Darren Rovell has spent a lot of energy covering the many marketing moves of Ana Ivanovic (and what a great job he’s done), I feel like the recent developments in Serena‘s world deserve mention…

Back on the web: First, after being MIA at least since the beginning of 2007, her official website is back up and running. I’m not in love with that cursive font she uses in her note to fans, but hey it’s a start. Not sure what’s going to happen with her blog. (It’s been cited in a few media outlets — who I can only assume fact-check — so we’ll go with it.)

HP’s “Hands”: Serena is also the latest star of HP’s ads which have previously featured Shaun White and Vera Wang. The TV ad focuses on her passions, “including tennis, fashion, movies, video games, animation, and music.” They’ll run on USA and ESPN (and online at SI.com).

The ad also plays when users visit the “Serena Web Experience” — a mash-up of vlogs (from friends and family), downloadable ringtones (her grunts!!), and clips of her Jackass moment with Wee Man — involving a pineapple, of all things.

FYI: The ads were created by Omnicom Group‘s Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco.

How does Serena choose endorsements?:

I don’t take every offer that comes along — I get a lot of them. I think sometimes my agent (Jill Smoller) gets mad at me! Not really; she understands, but she does kid me about it: “Are you going to turn down everything?” I don’t want to attach my name, like some athletes or celebrities or whatever, to just anything. It has to fit my values, my personality. … And my partners are always involved in philanthropic things. They’re companies that give back, and that goes well with me. It’s not really about the money. … [The brand of] Serena Williams is not for the now; it’s for a lifetime. (via Ad Age)

Boobs, schmoobs: And Serena takes part in a series of ads by Nike Women which comment on the place of women in sports. Manhattan got a billboard from the campaign in time for the U.S. Open. It’s a picture of Serena Williams wearing a blue shirt printed with the word “ATHLETE”. The accompanying text asks, “Are you looking at my titles?” Titles, titties — get it?

AdRants wonders why Nike would stoop to the level of objectifying women if the point is to move away from that. (But female fans drool over male athletes all the time, so I guess it’s okay…)

FYI: As a part of the campaign, Nike founded the Let Me Play Fund with $425,000 in cash and equipment. The fund will benefit women’s sports orgs.

fashion preview: venus' u.s. open outfits

Funny that this morning I was wondering what Reebok was making for Venus to wear at this year’s U.S. Open. As you might know, Venus’ crazy sponsorship deal — which paid $40 million over five years starting in 2000 — wasn’t renewed because of all her injuries (poor thing). But she had worked out a deal that paid her to wear these short shorts at Wimbledon.

Now she’s bounced back by partnering up with Steve & Barry’s for her clothing line EleVen (at an announcement that overshadowed the Masha/Nike red dress junket yesterday, I might add). Venus will wear some of pieces on the court in Flushing Meadows, including this dress and $15 (!) pair of shoes above.

I think that color will look good on her. And I LOVE the collar on that sleeveless top. Brava!

Posing for Vuitton: I’m so excited that both will appear in the latest Louis Vuitton campaign where “bling is out” and the focus is on LV’s “heritage as a maker of trunks, suitcases and other travel-related items.” The Graf/Agassi ad shows them in a loose embrace in a New York hotel. Other photos show Mikhail Gorbachev riding in a Kruschev-era limousine along the Berlin Wall (photo above) and actress Catherine Deneuve with a Vuitton case in front of a steam locomotive at the Gare d’Austerlitz in Paris. Steffi steps up: I pooped my pants yesterday when I read that Steffi and Justine Henin will be playing in an exhibition match in October to benefit Graf’s charity, Children for Tomorrow. I won’t be going to Mannheim, so someone post it on YouTube, ok?

Their post-tennis business ventures: This Bloomberg story goes over all their major projects, including San Francisco restaurants, furniture lines (with Kreiss), and real estate. The latest? A Fairmont Hotel near their Tamarack Resort in Idaho.

As was mentioned in a Daily Mail profile a few weeks back, among Maria Sharapova‘s many obligations is being ambassador for the Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer.

The company designed a signature pink watch in her honor. It’s encrusted with 120 diamonds and goes for almost $2,000.

who will fill clijsters' shoes at fila? + "settantatre" collection

Sport Brands International Ltd. sold Fila USA to Fila Korea, Ltd. for $400 million one month ago, finally succumbing to the Sisyphusian task of rebuilding the sports brand into a legitimate competitor of Nike, Reebok, and the other big boys.

Which isn’t to say that Fila Korea needs to start at square one. They have some momentum from last fall’s launch of the Settantatre collection — that’s “1973″ in Italian — which coincided with New York Fashion Week. Much like Puma’s French 77 line, Fila reissued their greatest hits from the era of Borg and Vilas, but with a limited edition run of 500 pieces per item.

This change in ownership also comes at a time when one of Fila’s highest profile athletes, Kim Clijsters, has announced her immediate retirement from tennis. CEO Jon Epstein should think long and hard about who will fill this gaping hole in their on-court sponsorship roster. They need a player who can summon that retro je ne sais quoi. Perhaps Tommy Robredo? Elena Dementieva? Paul Henri-Mathieu? (Whom should Fila consider? Tell us.)

Which isn’t to say that Fila should write off Kimmy’s marketability. In fact, that isn’t part of the strategy: Lauren Mallon, Fila’s Global Marketing Manager, confirms with Tennis Served Fresh that they have no plans to end their relationship with Kim.
