A fashionable Rafa subbed for Roger

The loss of Roger Federer to Andy Roddick at last week’s Sony Ericsson Open created a vacuum in fashionable men’s tennis gear, but Rafael Nadal quickly stepped up to the plate. Fortunately for TSF, some good screencaps by the folks at VamosBrigade.com (plus photojournalists at the tourney) have given us a good look at Rafa’s head-to-toe Nike kit for the week.

no more singles for arnaud, but will play doubles with llodra

FYI, I’m not entirely in love with “Nono” as a nickname for Arnaud Clement, but it might stick over time…

He lost to Rainer Schuettler in the first round of the Australian Open. The German prevailed 4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 4-6. Arnaud had a couple of costume changes with that bandana, wearing the purple, the baby blue, and this red/yellow one I haven’t noticed before.

More left: Lucky for us, there’s more of Clement to see this week. He’s entered in doubles with Michael Llodra as the seventh seeds.

fashion focus: another buff from arnaud clement

Frenchman Arnaud Clement‘s trademark look gets another log in our bandana book at this week’s Hopman Cup. Here he is playing the men’s singles match against team Taiwan.

Lovin’ the thin yellow bracelet, and for those wondering about the honeycomb kicks, they’re from Lacoste‘s Repel line.

FYI: His team (with partner Tatiana Golovin) placed second in their respective group. They did not make it to the finals. No trophy, but they at least got to attend a kick-ass party.

we squinted, and we saw gucci

serena williams - gucci - zurich

Even with her early exit at this week’s Zurich Open, it wasn’t lost on TSF that Serena Williams walked onto the court with a Gucci shoulder bag. (She clearly can’t part with the thing; it even made a cameo at the press conference.)

And kudos to Serena for yet another new hair accessory to match her winter Nike outfit. This time, the swoosh bandana came out in burgundy. At last week’s Kremlin Cup, it was stealth grey.

at stockholm, clement's re-buffed

Gigantor Ivo Karlovic (at 6’10”) continues his 2007 standing date with short (5’8″) Frenchman Arnaud Clement by meeting him in the quarterfinals of this week’s Stockholm Open. In their fourth meeting of the year (and sixth overall), Karlovic evens their head-to-head at 3-3; the Croat had to save one match point during the 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (7) win.

Thanks to Nick for pointing out this new buff that we hadn’t seen on Arnaud before. Cheers. (See his other bandanas here.)

And a quote from Karlovic after his victory: “I was playing also really good so in the end I was a little bit more focused than him and that’s why I won. The surface is pretty fast but his balls are a little bit slow I think.” He beat Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3 and will meet Thomas Johansson in the finals. Johansson upset top seed James Blake 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the other semi. (ATP)

fashion: the many bandanas of arnie clement

It’s a rarity that you’ll see Arnaud Clement competing sans headband. The French tennis pro — who’s sponsored by Lacoste — pairs this with shades to manage hair, sweat, and sun during his matches.

Want your own?: You can visit planetbuff.com, whose UV Buff headwear is perfect for protecting your head from the sun while wicking away sweat. They carry a bunch of cool prints.

More pics: Arnaud has a few of these bandanas in rotation… solid purple and plus a few prints. His looks from this year’s U.S. Open are here, and the ones from Roland Garros are below:
