In February, South Africa Davis Cup captain Marcos Ondruska announced his squad to take on Luxembourg in the first round of the Euro/Africa Zone Group 2 contest. Ondruska has chosen Tucker Vorster, Lloyd Harris, Ruan Roelofse, Dean O’Brien and Keith-Patrick Crowley in his squad as South Africa look to assert themselves as a real force in the sport.
Unfortunately, South Africa’s top rated player Kevin Anderson was not up for selection – which was disappointing for a number of tennis fans across the globe. Anderson is currently ranked 15th in the world and broke into the top ten back in October but his busy personal schedule wouldn’t allow him to fully commit to South Africa’s Davis Cup team. However, that gives plenty of other players the opportunity to prove their worth at the top level.

The inclusion of Lloyd Harris was particularly interesting. The 18-year-old may be young but he’s a supreme talent and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him climb up the world rankings in the future. He mustn’t grow overconfident but his inclusion certainly tells you a lot about what Ondruska thinks of him. Harris could well be the next poster boy for South African tennis and the Capetonian is certainly an exciting prospect if nothing else.
In their first match of the year, a dominant South Africa thrashed Luxembourg with a clean sweep performance – an impressive feat. South Africa were well worth their 5-0 victory, with Tucker Vorster stealing the limelight with a sensational individual effort against Tom Diederich. Meanwhile, youngster Harris also cruised to victory with a 6-2 6-1 straight sets success over Alex Knaff in front of a packed crowd.
Unfortunately, it may be quite some time before South Africa’s next Davis Cup clash. However, tennis/sport fans can head to Springbok Casino to get their sport gaming fix in anticipation for the next set of fixtures. With new playable content regularly available– including a soccer game called Football Frenzy – you can enjoy online gaming and South Africa’s tennis team will be back in action before you know it!
South African tennis is on the rise – there’s no doubt about it. With the likes of Harris and Vorster in the side, Ondruska has plenty of upcoming talent to work with and the 43-year-old could pass on some useful tips and hints to both stars. As expected, they cruised past Luxembourg but there will be stiffer tests to come – especially if the Springboks plan on announcing themselves as a major player on the world stage.
