in marseilles, the fans go fishing

Fans fish for autographs at the Open 13 in Marseille

Sightings in the Stands: The fans attending the Open 13 ATP stop in Marseilles have gotten smart about their autograph procurement.

Draw: The quarterfinals are now set for the men in France, with Jerzy Janowicz taking on top seed Tomas Berdych. Janowicz has made noise in France before (see: Bercy 2012), and with Berdych needing three sets to take down Ernests Gulbis in the second round, this could be another test for the Czech. Other quarterfinal match-ups are qualifier Dmitry Tursunov (who took out fellow Fila mascot Janko Tipsarevic) vs. Gilles Muller; Bernard Tomic against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Gilles Simon taking on second seed Juan Martin del Potro. U.S. National Indoor Championship - Homepage

Homepages: Not much going in the world of homepages this week, though we are into the country club cuteness of the banner for the U.S. National Indoor Championship — a combined tournament in Memphis. We also wished that their results pages was a little more dynamic. We had to scroll through a lot to find the draws for the various titles being contested.

Browse: All the looks are available at Opening Ceremony (and the tennis collection will be available in mid-March). FYI, the first collaboration came on the eve of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

Li Na - Nike Women's Spring 2013 lookbookWristband tan chic: The folks at Nike released these pictures of Li Na wearing pieces from the company’s Spring 2013 Women’s collection. The Chinese superstar is still recovering from the ankle injury she sustained during that tense 2013 Australian Open final, which she lost to Victoria Azarenka. As such, Li did not participate in this week’s Dubai Duty Free Championships. Other ladies have fallen out, too: Vika withdrew because of a foot injury, and Serena Williams bowed out before her second round match against Marion Bartoli because of a lower back issue. The semifinal match-ups will pit Sara Errani against Roberta Vinci and Petra Kvitova with Caroline Wozniacki. ita men’s indoors: virginia takes down usc

Emilio Gomez plays in the ITA National Men/s Tennis Team Indoor Championship

Cavalier Tennis: The second-seeded USC Trojans were no match for top team Virginia at this past weekend’s 2013 ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship, hosted in Seattle by the University of Washington. Virginia won the final 4-2, taking the doubles point and the top three singles points. USC gets top clothing marks, though, especially with this retro kit from the earlier rounds and the all-black Nike outfit (seen above on Emilio Gomez), which reminds us of the Darth Federer outfit, also by Nike, worn by Roger Federer at the 2007 U.S. Open.

Also noted is the change of Pepperdine‘s kits from Quiksilver to adidas (Seen here on Finn Tearney.

ana ivanovic shows off the jumeirah hotel in dubai

Ana Ivanovic - Dubai Duty Free Championships ambassador

Talkin Dirty: DDFTC ambassador Ana Ivanovic starred in a video highlighting the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, a sponsor for the tennis event, being held this week in Dubai. Those red sofas in that photo above, she points out, are designed by Zaha Hadid. (Nothing gets us going like a tennis star run-in with a starchitect!) Ana is also asked by the hotel to create a piece of tennis-themed art that will be displayed in the property’s gallery. It was reminiscent of the canvases painted by the ATPers who qualified for the Barclay’s ATP World Tour Finals in 2010. (Watch: Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Feature – Ana Ivanovic)

Draw: Ivanovic beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round of the tournament and will next face sixth seed Petra Kvitova. They share that bottom half of the singles draw with Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska. The top half of the draw is up for grabs after top seed Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the event because of a foot injury.
