Double Trouble: Don’t be too surprised. To go along with their New Yorker piece, the Bryan Brothers are also featured in this week’s Times Magazine, the Sunday NYT publication. This photo comes from the piece, which spans five internet pages and was released early (today) via the web. It will run Sunday, the day before the USO begins. Two high-profile pieces for the American pair in one week? We wouldn’t expect anything else. Oh, and if you like audio, check out the New Yorker interview here.
Posting Fashion: The New York Post ran a sprite and sweet article today on tennis fashion, featuring an interview with Ms. Tennis Fashionista herself, Maria Sharapova. Maria names her five fall must-haves, and (shocker!), two of her own pieces on the top of the list. A fashion shoot from Randall’s Island for the article is below.
Me, Two: Not to be outdone, Serena Williams is currently in issues of both Vogue (on one of the 576(!) pages) and Self magazines. While we couldn’t dig out either feature from the web, we did find this gem of a photo gallery from Style.com, the home of Vogue. One particular picture features Serena next to Anna Wintour, who’s been under heavy criticism lately.
That’s Tennys, With a ‘Y’: Rafael Nadal’s hitting partner at the French Open, American Tennys Sandgren, is making his first-ever appearance at the US Open this week in qualifying, starting tomorrow. Yep, that’s Tennys, with a ‘y’. The 18-year-old from Tennessee is following through on his namesake — literally. There’s also an American named Michael Venus in the qualies. Small world, isn’t it?
Overseas, Under the Radar: While she was under a media microscope at Wimbledon, British teenager Laura Robson is quietly entered the women’s qualifying tournament. The 15-year-old is attempting to make a slow transition from the junior game to the big leagues. Also in the women’s qualies is former major semifinalist, Nicole Vaidisova. The Czech is currently ranked 143rd in the world, thanks to a 7-12 season thus far.
