They smell blood: Former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova lost in the quartefinals of the Warsaw Open to Alona Bondarenko, ending the Russian’s first bid at a singles title since August of last year.
Props to Alona for dictating play and stepping up for this 6-2, 6-2 victory. Sharapova put in 78% of her first serves, but they were much weaker because of lack of match play (and a bum shoulder).
Eggs in a cushy basket: We all scratched our heads when K-Swiss decided on Ukranian Bondarenko as the postergirl for their tennis attire, but it looks like it’s paying off. She’s received her fair share of photo time with wins over Kuznetsova and Chakvetadze in Madrid and now Masha in Warsaw.
A look at the items she’s worn from the K-Swiss Spring and Summer 7.0 Groups after the cut…
At the Australian, she wore the Spaghetti Strap Tank in Sun Orange/Geranium. It has a cutout on the back and a contrast “layer” — a detail also being used over at adidas. $36.95 at TW.
And a version of the Spring Zip Polo made an appearance at the Fed Cup ties in February. Note the K-Swiss logo silkscreened over the zipper placket. $46.99 at TW.
In Charleston (back in April), Alona played in the Summer Tankini (available in Directoire Blue and Poison Green). $36.99 at TW. Here she is playing compatriot Viktoriya Kutuzova.
One week before the Family Circle Cup, Alona wore the Summer Racer Tank against Nadia Petrova in the quarters of the MPS Group Championships (in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.). $36.99 at TW.
