Andy Murray will recapture his world number two ranking after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Rome Masters. Having comfortably reached the final in Italy thanks to victories over the likes of Mikhail Kukushkin and Lucas Pouille, Murray was in dominant form in despatching of the world number one in straight sets on Sunday afternoon. The defeat for the Serbian was just his fifth in nine months, and with the upcoming French Open just around the corner, Murray is likely to take huge confidence heading to Rolland Garros. The two players had only met just a week earlier, with Djokovic defeating his rival in the final of the Madrid Masters.
His latest victory meant that Murray claimed just his third clay court title, following wins in Munich and Madrid last year. Despite Djokovic seemingly becoming frustrated with the wet conditions in Rome, Murray kept his concentration to win in style despite the rain. As a result of his recent upturn in results, the Scot is 4/1 third favourite with bookmakers Coral behind Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to claim his first French Open title.
As for Nadal, the nine-time French Open champion was defeated by Djokovic in the quarter finals in Rome, having lost out to Murray just a week earlier in Spain. Despite two hurtful defeats, Nadal will undoubtedly be one of the leading contenders in Paris as the tournament kicks off this week. The Spaniard is also given odds of 4/1 by Coral as the big hitting left hander looks to claim his first Grand Slam title since 2014. Check out the whole French Open schedule, as Coral follow Murray, Nadal and Djokovic throughout the two weeks.
Quickly following the dirt courts of Roland Garros comes the green grass of Wimbledon. However, with the usual suspects set to battle it out in South-West London, it could be the US Open betting market that provides the best opportunity for earnings. With the likes of Marin Cilic and Juan Martin Del Potro upsetting the odds in recent history, this year’s tournament could well provide another opportunity for an upset. Former Australian Open and French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is offered odds of 14/1 for this year’s tournament at Flushing Meadows, with colourful Aussie Nick Kyrgios at 25/1 to claim a first Grand Slam title.
