Maria Sharapova’s last win over Serena Williams was 10 years ago followed by 16 losses in a row. And with statistics like that you are willing , no, you MUST make an end to that losing streak. But that is not what happened.

Sharapova started the match with three double faults in her first game. Serena Williams piled on the pressure and after a little over 30 minutes she took the first set.

There was a little more fight from Sharapova in the second set. She managed to keep up until 2-2 but with the fourth double fault Sharapova practically gave it away. Williams showed no mercy at all and took a 4-2 lead. However Williams became complacent and almost paid the price for that.

Sharapova resurrected herself in the eighth game of the second set and took a 0-30 lead. Williams hit four winners in a row to take back control and end Sharapova’s little revival.  After failing to cash in two matchpoints on Sharapova’s serve , she did not fail to close out the match by hitting four aces.

Garbine Muguruza’s spot in the finals surprises everyone

Garbine Muguruza has reached the finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her very short career.  Muguruza defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in a thrilling three set 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.  Muguruza is the first Spanish woman to reach a Grand Slam final since Conchita Martinez (Roland Garros 2000) and the first in a Wimbledon final since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 1996.

Muguruza chokes

At 6-2 and a 3-1 lead Muguruza choked to the point where she allowed Radwanska to take six games in a row and it looked like Radwanska was in control of the match.

It looked to continue in the third set but in the second game of the third set she lost a 40-0 lead and the possibility to take a 2-0 lead. As Muguruza slowly regained her confidence, Radwanska started to lose control over the match. With a strong attacking game the Spanish pushed back the defensive Polish and broke the service at 1-0 and again at 3-2.

At 5-3 Muguruza was fighting stay in the match with two breakpoints for Radwanska. But after that she cashed in her first matchpoint and booked a spot in her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
