A Wimbledon 2015 quarterfinals round up with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet coming off as the winners.

Roger Federer stays on course for the eighth Wimbledon title

Roger Federer stays on course for the eighth Wimbledon title  with an easy win over Frenchman Gilles Simon in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. But for the first time in 116 games the Swiss’  service was broken at the end of the second set. Federer broke back immediately and took the set.

The third was all Federer and Simon only really just showed up.

Federer was quite happy with the way he  bounced back from the break. Said it was too bad that his service was broken for the first time since Halle but that Simon played an excellent game and that made it easier to accept. He was happy with his overall performance.

Federer now meets crowd favorite Andy Murray in the semifinal.

Andy Murray beats tournament revelation Vasek Pospisil

Andy Murray also had an easy time reaching the semi finals.  Murray beat tournament revelation Vasek Pospisil in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.  Whatever the scoreline says,  Pospisil didn’t go down without a fight and had some beautiful moments throughout the match fighting for every point.

But Canadian never looked like he was going to pull a big stunt simply because Murray was too strong. Murray served amazingly well (only one breakpoint against) and only made 13 unforced errors.

Andy Murray now faces Roger Federer. They have played each other 23 times and two times on grass. Federer takes the lead with  12-11 head-to-head.  Federer beat Murray for the Wimbledon 2012 title while Murray beat Federer for Olympic Gold.

Richard Gasquet upsets Stanislas Wawrinka

In a thrilling  five set match, Frenchman Richard Gasquet beat the number four seed and French Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka  6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. It is the second time since 2007  that Gasquet reaches the semis of Wimbledon.

It is the first time since 2002 that there were more than 14 games played in the fifth set in a quarter finals match.  Back in 2002 it were Xavier Malisse and (there he is again) Richard Gasquet with Malisse taking that fifth and final set with 9-7.

After three and a half hours Gasquet cashed in his third match point and he did that against the Wawrinka’s trademark singlehanded backhand.

Gasquet now faces Novak Djokovic who beat Marin Cilic.

Novak Djokovic defeats Marin Cilic with superb efficiency

Novak Djokovic is only two matches away from defending the Wimbledon title. With superb efficiency the Serb beat Croatian Cilic in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Djokovic seemed fully recovered from his five set match two days earlier versus South African Kevin Anderson. Djokovic controlled the match and dominated with his serve. He got the job done in an hour and 50 minutes.

Djokovic: “The top players are expected to reach the semi-finals of Grand Slams but I try not to take it for granted”

The Wimbledon semi finals marks the 27th time that Djokovic reached the semis of a Grand Slam tournament.  Only three other players did that more often:  Federer (37), Jimmy Connors (31) and Ivan Lendl (28).

Novak Djokovic now faces Richard Gasquet for a spot in that Wimbledon final.
