Varvara Lepchenko (USA #46)

Samantha Stosur (AUS #22)
- Making 11th main draw appearance at US Open. Champion here in 2011, defeating S.Williams in the final. One of only three women who have been able to defeat S.Williams in a Grand Slam final (also V.Williams, Sharapova)
- Also a two-time quarterfinalist here, in 2010 (l. eventual champion Clijsters) and 2012 (l. eventual runner-up Azarenka)
- One of three former US Open champions through to the R16 at the US Open (other two are S.Williams and V.Williams)
- Has reached two Grand Slam singles finals, winning the 2011 US Open title and finishing runner-up at 2010 Roland Garros (l. Schiavone in F)


Flavia Pennetta (ITA #26)
- Making 11th main draw appearance at US Open. Achieved her best Grand Slam singles result to date when she advanced to SF in 2013 (ranked No.83 at the time, l. Azarenka). Has advanced to at least QF at Flushing Meadows in five of the past six years, falling at this stage in 2008 (l. Safina), 2009 (l. S.Williams), 2011 (l. Kerber) and 2014 (l. S.Williams). Prior to 2008, did not advance past 2r
