a swig of fresh water

Maria Sharapova dropped by Evian’s “Babies on the Inside” event in Soho yesterday. The Openhouse gallery was packed with folks taking pics with the Baby tees, and in the back, Maria spent some time hanging out, chatting about idolizing Bono (for his humanitarianism), being a fan of Jack Nicholson (her favorite movie: “Something’s Gotta Give”), and other topics.

Over the Evian tee Maria wore a black DVF crop blazer with frayed lapels. She matched those with metallic Phillip Lim hot pants and peep-toe booties from her Fall 2010 Cole Haan collection.

And while there’s no official announcement from Tiffany, Maria will again be wearing their jewelry as part of her U.S. Open ensemble — this time drop earrings with yellow diamonds. Expect a Cole Haan bag to go with the Nike clothes and shoes, of course.

she’s got gams, not game

Tsvetana Pironkova‘s noise-making run into the 2010 Wimbledon semis didn’t quite convert into success during this summer’s US Open series. At this week’s event in New Haven, the Bulgarian lost to qualifier Anastasia Rodionova 6-1, 7-5. This is the second time in a month that Tsvetana’s lost to Anastasia. (Draw: Women’s Singles.)

On the flip side, the girl takes a good picture! (Nick found the link above… can someone help us with the Cyrillic text?)

Looking forward: Because of all the drop-outs at the top of the WTA rank list, Tsvetana’s seeded 32nd for the 2010 U.S. Open. (She’s ranked 34.)

the “courage” to “believe”

Busy New York bee Melanie Oudin on her 2010 U.S. Open miadidas Barricade 6.0 shoes from adidas: “The reason I chose the word COURAGE is because in order to believe you have to have the courage to do so… Courage to me means playing with no fear and going for it no matter what. You can believe in yourself so much but unless you have the courage to go on the court and put yourself on the line every time you won’t make it. You need courage and belief to make it to the top.”

Kit: Melanie will complement the vibrant colors of this shoe with her Fall Barricade tank and skort, both in “Collegiate Purple” and “Radiant Red”. Can’t wait to see it all in action next week!

Slow start: At this week’s Open warm-up in New Haven — the Pilot Pen Tennis at Yale — Oudin snatched a set from Dominika Cibulkova (a lucky loser, even!) before losing: 2-6, 7-5, 4-6. (Draw: Women’s Singles [pdf])

venus, ralph lauren make eleven (brand) babies + macy’s appearance

Venus Williams is teaming up with Polo Ralph Lauren to put on the Legends Clinic tomorrow on Randall’s Island, an affair that will feature interactive instruction (streamed live on RalphLauren.com) and a limited-edition dress in partnership with Williams’ apparel brand Eleven to be worn by the champion during the clinic.

TSF will be there to strut our tennis stuff (or just gawk at V herself) and check out the Eleven/Ralph Lauren offspring first hand. Submit your questions for Venus via this link and she just may answer them live tomorrow.

See Venus: Tomorrow night in NYC, at the Herald Square Macy’s when Venus herself will be on the 2nd floor (the men’s department of all places!) at 6 PM. More details are here, including how you can score awesome Venus/tennis stuff with Macy’s purchases.

Two more Venus shots after the cut. [Read more...]

caro makes play for verdasco on twitter, gets no @reply

Wozy got no @reply love from Fernando Verdasco after sending out this Tweet late last night. Maybe she thought he only dates world number 1s? Caro, you’re the number one seed! And Serena would never date Fernando. We would though, especially after Kenneth in the 212 posted some GQ shots from Verdasco’s shoot with them.

While Wozy was falling asleep dreaming of having little Ferdies running around with high pony tails wearing Stella McCartney spring dresses, Verdasco was with his sisters, chowing down in Chinatown and looking beautiful.

oops! she did it again?

Oudin knows the camera (phones) will be turned on her over the next two weeks. “Crazy things happen in NYC.” (TSF photo)

Brand Oudin is making its biggest push in New York this week, one year after Melanie Oudin wowed the New York crowds and captured the nation’s attention with her eye-popping upsets. Oudin is part of campaigns with adidas, American Express and Virgin Mobile in and around NYC to promote the Open (and said products), even though the American teen is a dismal 3-11 on tour since May.

The web was buzzing earlier this week with the announcement that Oudin would wear customized adidas shoes, this year with the word “Courage” emblazoned on them. Last year, her “Believe” shoes were a US Open obsession, spawning what many called “Melanie Mania” and setting Oudin up for commercial success with deals with companies like Virgin Mobile. The Women Who Serve blog said if it were really up to Oudin she might have wanted to chose “Forget” to go on her shoes this year… as in forget last year’s Open.

But if Oudin wants to Oops! Do it again, she’ll have to do all those things: have courage, believe in herself and forget. The New York media will be shameless in the coverage and glamorization of Oudin in her return to New York, even the girl has obviously worked hard in the gym (check the adidas link… those biceps!) but hasn’t seen results on the court. Can’t we all just leave her alone? C Note thinks that’ll help, too.

After the cut: ad shots from Oudin’s adidas customized shoe and the American Express video. [Read more...]

forever young

Swing by to get your picture taken in one of the tees, play some ping pong, and perhaps even see Maria when she drops by! They’ll also be giving away the baby tees and tickets to the Open. More info about the giveaway via Facebook.

the rags want tennis riches: a media round-up

The mags and papers are finally picking up the scent of the 2010, which starts in less than a week. For the media nerds out there, here’s a quick look at what’s going on…

Bad boy goes good: At New York, writer Larry Platt profiles the homegrown John McEnroe, who’s currently entering a new phase in his tennis career with the opening of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy at Randall’s Island.

If you can’t beat them… Bloggers get a lot of love over at the New York Daily News website, where the newspaper’s coverage of the tournament will be supplemented with RSS feeds from the blogs. Thanks for the love, NYDN!

September is the January of Tennis: The September/October 2010 issue of Tennis is the largest in two years, buoyed by a new cross-platform focus for advertising. (via MinOnline)

It’s worth a shot: We’re excited to see if the re-imagined ESPN The Magazine — which’ll devote each issue to a sport or theme — can successefully sell a tennis-focused edition. (via FOLIO:)

Etc.: Nothing from The New Yorker‘s Sporting Scene yet, but we can’t wait!

caro has stella, but ana keeps the corner

Caroline Wozniacki might be adidas‘ choice to sport the much-coveted Stella McCartney line on the court, but her predecessor, Ana Ivanovic, still books the corner spot when it comes to ad space.

The adidas Soho store in New York has a bank of windows full of tennis players and gear (Wozniacki, Ivanovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray) in anticipation for the US Open, but while Wozy might have the most square footage of any subject with her McCartney display, it’s Ivanovic and Murray who get one of Manhattan’s busiest street corners (Broadway and Houston) to peer over all day long.

There’s no Maria Kirilenko (the former Stella gal) in sight in the window display (full photos after the jump), nor does 2009 US Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin make an appearance.

Full window display shots of all four players after the cut. [Read more...]

sunday survey: mia

We realize we’ve been missing in action here on TSF for the last couple of weeks, but we’re amping things up just in time for the US Open to begin come next Monday. We found out over the last few days that Serena Williams and Juan Martin del Potro will both be missing in action on the courts of the National Tennis Center in Queens, but that women’s defending champion Kim Clijsters announced yesterday that she was fit to play and try to defend her crown.

All of this comes after a weird summer of tennis. We’ll have more on that later, but in the meantime, we’re wondering who your pick is to take the Open. Men’s? Women’s? Who will rise in Serena’s absence? Can Roger capture the Open crown with del Potro gone? Or is it time for one of those folks (Murray, Jankovic, etc.) to rise up and win his or her first slam?

Give us your choices for the winners of the year’s final Slam, and remember that anything can happen on the courts of New York.
