trophy watch: the post-Open asian swing

Trophy watch: The men and the women stopped by Asia this week to contest titles in Beijing, Bangkok, Korea. We saw rematches and familiar faces from last week and last year. A roundup of the winners, their trophies, and what they wore — all after the cut…

Tsonga exacts revenge: Early 2008 breakout star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (peekaboo!) beats top seed Novak Djokovic at the Thailand Open 7-6 (4), 6-4, reversing the drubbing he took in the hands of the Serbian at the Australian Open final this year.

Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes win the doubles title over Scott Lipsky and David Martin.

Bubbles are the way to go: Perhaps Ana Ivanovic needs to go back to her adidas bubble dress, seeing that Maria Kirilenko just won the Hansol Korea Open — one-upping her loss in the finals last year to Venus Williams. Maria took out surprise finalist Sam Stosur 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Stosur wore bright red Nike.

Maria is rockin’ the dress from the f/w ’08 adidas by Stella McCartney collection.

In China, Andy Roddick ended the amazing run of Israeli Dudi Sela with a 6-4, 6-7, (6), 6-3 victory in the final. Sela, wearing a red version of his Davis Cup polo, took his momentum from last weekend’s tie to beat Ferrer, Robredo, and Schuettler at this tournament.

Aussie Stephen Huss (right) and Brit Ross Hutchins teamed up for a trophy against Ashley Fisher and Bobby Reynolds. The score: 7-6, 6-4.

On the women’s side, the ladies braved the cold weather (layers all over) for their Beijing battles.

Doing no good to her psyche, Svetlana Kuznetsova lost her second final in as many weeks, this time to Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-2. The Russian beat Jelena in Tokyo (and on American clay earlier this year), but couldnt figure it out this time around.

Caroline Wozniacki continues to make a name for Danish tennis with her doubles victory (with Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues) over local duo Han and Xu 6-1, 6-3.

Never too late: American Jim Courier is still racking up titles, this week defeating Todd Martin 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 at the Citadel Group Championships in Charlotte. This event is part of the Outback Champions (read: senior) Series.

I like Maria’s outfit too – a balanced contrast between the flouncy, bubble skirt (same fabric? connected to the top?) and the modern tank with scoop neck. Very flattering for her. And she’s having a great year! I also like Nike’s deep red with the black skirt/tights. There should be more cold weather! More clothing to examine!

Can someone please explain to me the increasingly annoying habit tournaments have of complimenting their trophies, elegant or ugly, with disgusting, cheap stuffed animals? What plushophile has taken over the tennis world?

The first picture with Novak and Jo is very nice…
And yeah, Ana really needs that bubble dress!
Those stuffed animals…I don’t know, they’re kind of cute to me…
