trophies - david nalbandian - madrid - justine henin - zurich

More boring trophies from this week’s tournaments: the Zurich Open and the Mutua Madrilena Masters in Madrid. David Nalbandian beat Roger Federer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win his first title of the year. He equaled Novak Djokovic‘s feat of defeating the Worlds No. 1 and 2 back-to-back in the same tournament. (Nole did it at the Rogers Cup.)

And Justine Henin continues her dominance of the women’s tour with her ninth title of the year. (She racked up four of them in this latest 20-match winning streak.) Justine took on Tatiana Golovin in the Zurich Open and won in straight sets — 6-4, 6-4.

  1. Both the Djokester and Nalbandian beat the No. 3 players en route to defeating Nos. 1 and 2 also. It just so happens that Novak is No. 3 now.

  2. I have him listed as beating Andy Roddick at the Rogers Cup. Wasn’t Andy the fifth seed at that tourney? Take a look at this draw sheet (PDF).

  3. “With wins over Andy Roddick and No. 2 Nadal in his previous rounds, Djokovic also became the first player to beat the world’s top three players in the same tournament since Boris Becker defeated No. 3 Michael Stich, No. 1 Pete Sampras and No. 2 Goran Ivanisevic in succession in 1994 in Stockholm.”

So Roddick was yet No. 3 at that time? Confused.

  4. Yay, I’m so happy for Bandy!!! Finally a great success after a terrible year for him… Hopefully he can climb up the ATP rankings again next year!
