you know i don't do brackets

Upsets happening left and right at the Cincy Masters and Rogers Cup. One of our resident bracketologists, Chris, chimes in:

What happened?? Fed is the only seed left on his half of the draw (granted, former GS champs Hewitt and Moya are still in) and both Djoko and Nadal lost today! Were they too tired after Toronto (just like Fed losing to Murray last year)?

Potential QFs: Fed vs. Nieminen, Moya vs. Hewitt, Berdych vs. Roddick, Blake vs. Querrey. Unfortunately, only one American can become a finalist as they’re all in the same half: Ginepri (who’s in the third set with Davydenko now), Roddick (who plays Ferrer next), Blake (who plays Ferrero — don’t get ‘em confused) and Querrey (who plays Monaco).

And on the women’s side, Chak and Ivanovic both lost today, as did Dementieva!

Potential QFs: Henin vs. Schnyder, Daniilidou vs. Bartoli, Golovin vs. Kuznetsova, and Peer vs. Jankovic.

It’s been a crazy day!!

  1. Nadal wasn’t too tired after Toronto — he actually had an injury and retired. It’s an almost inevitable thing that Nadal is going to be injury-prone, considering how physical he makes matches (and despite the physicality, he still lets them go on forever.) Gasquet also retired. I understand he’s got blisters, but he retired at Wimbledon too. In a semifinal! Man up, Richard!

Djokovic is a lot more shocking. He might be tired, and he should be after the Roddick-Nadal-Federer trifecta, but I’d think he’d manage at least one match here!

The only disagreement I have with that bracket is that I think Juan Carlos is gonna make another good run here and would put him in the quarter you’ve given to Blake.

  2. yeah … almagro has already beaten nieminen today … isn’t this his best result at a masters so far … and on a hard court at that?!? especially after what i thought was a slump clay season for him (compared to last year).

ferrero could beat blake … i was just going with blake thinking that he might actually pick his game up a little bit this summer, being an american tourney and all … of course, knowing james, he’ll win pilot pin and upset djoko or someone much better than him to make it to the open semis. ferrero has lost to andy in cincy in 05 and 06 … aint no reason why he cant lose to him again here in the SFs.
